How to Play Blackjack Online
Blackjack is the most popular table game at Irish online casinos, and for good reason. It offers the lowest house edge of any casino game when played correctly, giving skilled players the best mathematical chance of winning. The objective is straightforward: get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21.
Card Values in Blackjack
| Card | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2-10 | Face value | A 7 is worth 7 points |
| Jack, Queen, King | 10 | All face cards equal 10 |
| Ace | 1 or 11 | Flexible — counts as 11 unless that would bust you |
The Flow of a Hand
Every blackjack hand follows the same sequence. You place your bet. The dealer deals two cards to you (both face-up) and two cards to themselves (one face-up, one face-down). Based on your hand total and the dealer's visible card, you decide your action:
- Hit: Take another card to increase your hand total
- Stand: Keep your current hand and let the dealer play
- Double Down: Double your bet and receive exactly one more card
- Split: If you have two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands
- Surrender: Forfeit half your bet and fold (not available at all tables)
After all players have acted, the dealer reveals their hidden card and must follow fixed rules: hit on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more. If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's without busting, you win. A natural blackjack (Ace + 10-value card) typically pays 3:2.
Basic Blackjack Strategy
Basic strategy is a mathematically optimal set of decisions for every possible hand combination. Following it reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5% — the most player-friendly odds in any casino. Without basic strategy, the house edge rises to 2-3%.
| Your Hand | Dealer Shows 2-6 | Dealer Shows 7-A |
|---|---|---|
| Hard 8 or less | Hit | Hit |
| Hard 9 | Double if allowed, else Hit | Hit |
| Hard 10-11 | Double | Double (10 vs 10/A: Hit) |
| Hard 12 | Stand (vs 4-6), Hit (vs 2-3) | Hit |
| Hard 13-16 | Stand | Hit |
| Hard 17+ | Always Stand | Always Stand |
| Pair of Aces/8s | Always Split | Always Split |
| Pair of 10s | Never Split | Never Split |
Never take insurance — it has a house edge exceeding 7%, making it one of the worst bets in any casino.
Card Counting — Legal in Ireland?
Card counting is completely legal in Ireland. There is no law prohibiting mentally tracking cards. However, online RNG blackjack shuffles after every hand (impossible to count), and live dealer games use 8 decks with limited penetration, making any advantage negligible. For most Irish players, mastering basic strategy provides far better value than attempting card counting.
Best Blackjack Variants
| Variant | House Edge | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| European Blackjack | 0.39% | Dealer stands on soft 17, no hole card |
| Classic Blackjack | 0.43% | Standard rules, 6-8 decks |
| Lightning Blackjack | 0.64% | Random multipliers up to 25x |
| Infinite Blackjack | 0.50% | Unlimited players, four side bets |
| Free Bet Blackjack | 1.04% | Casino pays for doubles and splits |
Live Blackjack vs RNG
Live blackjack offers real dealers via video stream with authentic casino atmosphere, while RNG blackjack provides faster gameplay at lower stakes. Live tables run 60-80 hands per hour versus 200+ for RNG. For practice and small bankrolls, start with RNG. For the real experience, Evolution Gaming's live tables at 24Casino are our top recommendation.

Blackjack Odds & House Edge
| Scenario | Probability | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Natural blackjack | 4.83% | 3:2 |
| Dealer busts | 28.36% | 1:1 |
| Push (tie) | ~8.5% | Bet returned |
Avoid 6:5 Tables
Some tables pay 6:5 instead of 3:2 for blackjack. This increases the house edge by 1.4%. Always verify the payout ratio before playing.
